Dancing Heals is a Melbourne based four piece that tastefully weaves tales of nostalgia, angst and lust into melodic and memorable popular songs.
Combining youthful passion, soaring synths and crystal acoustics layered with the subtlety of red wine inebriation; the music lies somewhere between the thump of Arcade Fire and delicacy of Nick Drake.
The band was born in 2009 from a collection of seasoned Melbourne musicians. Featuring instruments ranging from electric and acoustic guitars, Hammonds and synths, to live drums and samples, the songs take on their own depth without conforming to any particular trend. It’s easy, inviting and layered for a thousand listens.
Taking a short break from Melbourne in April 2009, Jon-Lee took the song acoustic to North America – first up, alongside Youth Group in New York City and then further shows in New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver.
Since their live debut as a band in February 2010, Dancing Heals have played a slew of shows in Australia… standouts including shows with Astronautalis (USA) and Fanfarlo (UK).
In October 2010, the band took a self funded two week trip to Los Angeles, where they played a run of shows at venues including the Key Club on Sunset Strip and Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Making connections, selling a tonne of records and garnering interest from industry types, the band will return in 2012 with more artillery.
The band have just completed work on their debut long player with acclaimed producers & engineers Mandy Kane, Tony Espie (Breus, The Holidays) and Paul ‘Woody’ Annison (Children Collide, The Living End).
Within weeks of the album’s completion their new single “Live & Learn” was placed on a promo campaign in the US for NBC TV’s hit series “Covert Affair” … their second US sync deal within twelve months.
In late 2011, the ‘Diamonds’ single garnered airplay on US college and internet radio stations, receiving on-air attention from the likes of New England’s 95.5 WBRU, California’s KKSM and KOPA, Georgia’s WCHZ and the influential KCRW! Back home, the music video (by impressive rising filmmaker Tim White) for ‘Diamonds’ received rotation airplay on ABC’s “Rage”, screening for five consecutive weeks and culminating in the prime time Saturday morning slot of 9-10am.
Dancing Heals’ new single is a double-a side, titled “Live & Learn/Hillary May”, available on iTunes from January 30.
Dancing Heals are: Jon-Lee Farrell (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Daniel Trakell (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Joshua Wilson (bass, vocals), Jarrad Long (drums).
The band are currently working with both Tony Espie (Midnight Juggernauts, The Holidays) and Paul ‘Woody’ Annison (Children Collide, The Living End) on finishing off works for their debut long player.

REVIEWS:
BEAT Magazine – Single of the Week – 28 July 2010 Melbourne’s Dancing Heals are teasingly familiar, but defiantly odd; the melody never quite goes where you think it should. Jon-Lee Farrell’s voice strains slightly, pulling their lush and bullish indie rock into melancholic corners, bringing a country twang to their sound. It makes for such lovely listening. FASTERLOUDER.COM.AU – DH opening for Fanfarlo – 5 August 2010 Dancing Heals begin the night with a cracking and high energy set of youthful material. Their enthusiasm was instantly noticeable… Dancing Heals remained tight and controlled throughout, putting forward a great set and certainly one that will make people follow their paces. OFF THE RADAR – Blogspot A smooth flowing indie rock gem |
